本書を読んで思った率直な感想が、国家を運営に携わることはとても難易度が高そう、でした。
さらに、コンドリーザ・ライスは9.11テロの対応にも携わっていて、本書でもテロ当日の状況からイラク戦争に至るまで、コンドリーザ・ライスの苦悩も詳細に書かれています。
各国との調整・自国メディアへの対応・各省庁とのコンフリクト調整、とコンドリーザ・ライスが多方面にわたって影響を及ぼしていたことがわかります。
本書を読んで、コンドリーザ・ライスはとても利他的な人にように感じました。国家繁栄、大統領補佐という立場以上に自らの立場を強くしよう、といったことをあまり感じませんでした。
その理由は自らの活動履歴を読者に評価してもらうためだそうです。
自らがどんなことをしてきたのかオープンにして、評価してもらう風土があるとしたら、日本も見習いたいところです。
確かに、アメリカだと新しい法案を通すときには、発起人の名前が法案名となることがありますよね。
日本だとありえない感じですが、これは自らの名前が法案名になることが、活動結果と結び付きやすいからだと思います。
本書は膨大な文量なので全部読むのに苦労しますが、普段知ることができない、国家外交戦略に関する記述も多くとても勉強になりました。
アメリカの政治や国家運営に興味ある方は一読をオススメします。
My honest impression after reading this book was that being involved in running a country seems to be a very high degree of difficulty. Additionally, Condoleezza Rice was also involved in the response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the book details her struggles from the day of the attacks to the Iraq War.
It becomes clear that she had an influence in many areas such as coordinating with other countries, dealing with domestic media, and resolving conflicts with various government agencies.
After reading this book, I felt that Condoleezza Rice was a very altruistic person. I did not sense that she was focused on strengthening her own position beyond her role as a presidential advisor and the prosperity of the nation.
It seems that many American politicians write memoirs. The reason for this is to have their activities evaluated by readers. If there is a culture where one can open up and be evaluated for what they have done, Japan should learn from it. Indeed, in America, it is common for a new bill to be named after its sponsor.
This may seem impossible in Japan, but I think it is because having one's name attached to a bill makes it easier to link the results of their activities.
Although the book is voluminous and difficult to read in its entirety, there are many descriptions about national diplomatic strategies that are not usually known, making it a very educational read. I recommend it to those who are interested in American politics and national governance.
