面白い本は時間を惜しんで一気に読んでしまいますね。
本書ほど歴史の本でありながら面白くて、学びがたくさんある本は少ないと思っています。
2000年初めまでのアメリカの歴史を政治、経済、文化の観点から学ぶことができます。
私は本書を読んで、アメリカの人種問題の根深さを痛感しました。
法律上の差別はなくなっても日常生活、つまり、経済の差は変わらない。
人々はこういった日々のストレスを抱えているので、人種問題に絡む事件が起きたときに大規模な暴動へと発展する。
まさに今現在も通ずる話だと感じました。
あと、私が本書を読んで印象的だったのがベトナム戦争のところです。
戦争中、アメリカ国内に報道されていた情報は部分的にすぎず、次々と戦争の進捗が芳しくないことまた、人道に反する虐殺行為があったことが明るみに出ました。
自由の国アメリカといえども、そういった行いは起きうるものと理解しました。
報道の大切さを感じると同時に難しさも感じました。
というのも、中立的な報道をしようとしても、結局は権力を持っているその人が考える”国の利益”に依存するのではないか？と考えるからです。
"過去に眼を向けない物は、現在を理解することができない"
私が歴史が好きなのは、このフレーズが理由の1つと考えます。

Even in America, a free country, I understand that such actions can happen.
At the same time, I felt the importance of reporting, but also the difficulty.
Because even if you try to make a neutral report, you may end up relying on the "national interests" that the person with power thinks about.
